Faith

“Eric, I need your help,” Faith whispered into the phone.

She didn’t know why she was whispering. She was alone in her bungalow, sitting curled up in a chair facing the window open to the ocean. There was no one to overhear what she said. But it still seemed appropriate to whisper. She didn’t want to be making this call. She shouldn’t be speaking to Eric at all, especially about this issue. It even felt like she was breaking Gideon’s trust by doing it. But she wanted to help him, and this was the only way she could.

“Did Sundquist say something?” Eric asked, immediately interested.

“Sort of. Maybe.” Faith winced. Gideon had revealed no classified information to her, which was what Eric was interested in. She still knew nothing about the circumstances that cost Gideon his legs. But Gideon had said he needed someone to trust, and if she could locate that person for him, maybe wrongs could be made right, and he could get his freedom.

Eric was in the right position to help with such things. He had connections. But Faith didn’t know if he’d be willing to help, especially since she hadn’t gotten the information he wanted.

She took a deep breath. “Gideon said he submitted a report on his last mission. It sounds like it was an operation that was ordered but was off the record. The mission obviously didn’t go as planned, and there was a cover-up. Gideon was sent away and is forbidden to speak of what happened. He thinks the report he submitted was destroyed, and he doesn’t know who to trust with his story.”

“Does he remember the mission?” Eric asked tightly. “No gaps in his memories?”

What a weird question. “Sunny didn’t have a head injury, Eric. He remembers everything. He knows who ordered the mission, he knows why, and I’m sure he relieves every single second of that mission every day.”

“He didn’t have a head injury?” Eric echoed.

“No. He lost his legs. Not his head.” Why did she get the feeling that this conversation was pointless?

“So, he could tell you what happened?” Eric asked, his voice tense.

Faith rolled her eyes. So that’s what he wanted? He was still after money from Will’s death. And the only way he’d get that is if the military admitted to the operation in which Will was killed. “He won’t tell me, Eric. It’s classified, and he was ordered not to speak of it. He may be upset, but he’s still a soldier. He won’t reveal anything to me. But if we could find him someone in the government to trust, maybe he could be a whistleblower to get the situation taken care of. I just want him to have his life back.”

“His original report might still exist somewhere,” Eric offered. “I could look into it.”

“Gideon was sure it had been destroyed,” Faith insisted. “It had names and a full account of everything that happened. Now it only lives in him. Do you know of anyone trustworthy who has a high enough clearance? Gideon could submit another report, but he doesn’t know who to submit it to.
